![]() Register now to join the cultural community on Friday, June 20 for Arts Summit 2014 and take part in the work of developing a cultural policy framework for all of British Columbia. The morning will feature presentations by Michael Davis of BoardVoice on the similar work being done on provincial social policy, reports on the recent Where Next BC gathering and the ArtsBC conference, and an update from Bob D’Eith of Music BC on the creative industries’ experiences since last year’s launch of Creative BC. The main order of business will be the presentation of the BC Creative Convergence draft cultural policy framework. There will be plenty of opportunities at this one-day Summit for you to share your views, critique the draft framework, and send the BC Creative Convergence team back to the drawing board to incorporate your ideas in the final document. We will also be fine-tuning our engagement strategies for the coming months as we continue the BC Creative Convergence roundtables in communities throughout BC, seeking further input into the final framework document. Breakout sessions will be facilitated by Dialogue Leaders representing most of our sectors and disciplines and many of our province’s regions. These will include arts consultant Dawn Brennan, Peter Sandmark of ProArt Victoria; Linda LaFleur of the Columbia Basin Trust; Joanna Maratta of the BC Touring Council; and Judy Robertson of Metro Vancouver. Check-in opens at 8 a.m., Summit proceedings commence at 9 a.m, wrap-up at 4:30 p.m. Lunch and refreshments are included with registration. What is the bigger picture? At this year’s OuiShare Fest, entrepreneurs and social innovators, non-profit and business leaders, grassroots activists and public officials will gather in one place to build a common vision of a collaborative society. At Arts Summit 2013 we plan to take the next steps towards a comprehensive and sustainable cultural framework for our province and begin a year-long process that will see us return to the table in 2014 with a document for discussion and adoption. Arts Summit 2013, June 21 and 22 at the Roundhouse Community Arts & Recreation Centre, will include voices from all arts, cultural, and heritage sectors, the creative industries, the tourism and hospitality industries, all levels of government (elected and administrative), and other stakeholders. An important element will be representation from across the province, with collaboration with regional cultural community leaders. Part this year-long process will include taking the discussions on the road, across British Columbia, in the months leading up to Arts Summit 2014. Goals We will approach Arts Summit 2013 with three goals in mind: Educating Ourselves: We need to learn what cultural policy can look like, what forms it takes in other jurisdictions, and what it can (and cannot) be expected to do. Visioning BC Cultural Policy: We will share our individual visions for an inclusive cultural policy for British Columbia and begin to discuss the possibilities. Developing A Strategy: Coming out of the Summit we will have a twelve-month strategy that will result in our returning to the Roundhouse in 2014 with a working document for review. In late July, 2013, we will reconvene those interested in forming a twelve-month Task Force to begin the next steps towards that goal. More information and to Register ![]() Directing in the Performing Arts Summit will approach the profession of the director from a broad, interdisciplinary, international, and integrated perspective. Working synergistically with entertainment industry, we propose to identify, test, and (re)evaluate the fundamentals of the director’s art in various contexts (theatre, film, opera, dance, and new media), and to translate this knowledge into a viable working model that meets the needs of the 21st century. In order to use this knowledge in a meaningful, relevant, competitive, and financially sustainable manner, the new type of artistic leader requires not only the technical mastery of the medium, but also soft skills such as agility, communication, and an ability to work in teams. Directing in the Performing Arts Summit will create a space for established and aspiring artists and their audiences to engage in this process in a way that bridges the gap between theory and practice and promotes collaborations. The speakers and workshop leaders we are bringing together reflect this commitment to integration. Our program is structured as three overlapping spheres that encompass experiential process, observation and mentoring, and lectures and seminars. It will culminate in the Director’s Showcase production, in which four directors from four different fields of performance will present their variations on a common text.
